The Field Guide

This blog is dedicated to challenges and interests within the geospatial (remote sensing, photogrammetry, and GIS) community. Most commonly the blog will discuss themes surrounding ERDAS IMAGINE, but is not limited to ERDAS IMAGINE. The blog's name was borrowed from the “ERDAS Field Guide,” first printed in January 1990 (see the bottom of the blog).

ERDAS IMAGINE 2010 – coming in Q4 of 2009. 1st is the series of 2010 ads showing the UI as it develops.

March 1986 PE&RS

ERDAS 7.2 on IBM-PC/AT, VAX, Data General and Prime. 512 or 1024 x 32-bit displays, hardware roam and zoom, over 120 programs (including interactive image enhancement on hardware, GIS analysis, topographic & 3D capabilities, classification, geometric correction), menu driven, color scaled hardcopy, 9-track tape handling.

April 1988 PE&RS

ERDAS 7.4 with 1024 resolution and ERDAS ARC/INFO Link (later renamed to Live Link). The First mention of Live Link was in the Feb 1988 PE&RS 10th anniversary of ERDAS ad.

This late 1980's Erdasity Button was donated by Ulrich Terhalle of GEOSYSTEMS GmbH.

Spring 1991 ERDAS Monitor

LSU Prof. Dennis Fehler wrote, "GISMO is the most powerful spatial modeler yet. You can accomplish complex objectives in a fraction of the time it would take using conventional methods."

December 1991 PE&RS

ERDAS Digital Ortho for 7.5 Introduced

February 1992 PE&RS

ERDAS IMAGINE (8.0) Introduced

May 1993 PE&RS

Model Maker, Vector Module & Radar Module introduced. This ad has the phrase, “Intelligent Images Map the Future". This was modified to "The Map of the Future is an Intelligent Image" and trademarked for the September 1993 PE&RS ad.

October 1995 PE&RS

Map Series Tool Introduced as well as Windows 95 & NT

August 1994 GIS World

OrthoMAX Ad, not sure if this was from the pre 8.1 verison, but I believe it is. The ad was to promote OrthoMax and the Vector Module (1st GUI to edit Arc Coverages).

"IMAGINE OrthoBASE Bridges the Gap Between Digital Photogrammetry and GIS." Promoting the block ortho-correction over the single frame resection approach.

April 2000 PE&RS

"The World's Favorite Multi-Purpose Tool" and "The World's Favorite Multi-Purpose Geographic Imaging Software."

The First ERDAS Field Guide (7.4)

The ERDAS Field Guide was originally researched, written, edited and designed by Kerry McFall, Nicki Brown and Chris Smith at ERDAS, Inc. The ERDAS software engineers provided much of the technical information to Kerry, Nicki and Chris. The first published version was delivered along with ERDAS 7.4 in 1990. A Preview Edition of the ERDAS Field Guide was provided to friends and clients of ERDAS prior to publication. The comments provided by friends and clients refined the preview into the ERDAS Field Guide.
